5 Google Ads Mistakes That Waste Money for Local Businesses

Google Ads can be the fastest way to generate leads for a local business. But it can also be the fastest way to burn through your budget if the campaigns aren’t set up right.

After managing 950+ accounts and over $23M in ad spend, we’ve seen the same mistakes come up again and again. Here are the five that cost local businesses the most money.

1. Not using location targeting properly

This is the most common and most expensive mistake. Google’s default location setting is “Presence or interest”. which means your ads can show to people who are interested in your area, not just people who are in your area.

That means someone in another state researching your city could see your ad and click on it. You pay for that click, but they’re never going to become a customer.

The fix: Change your location targeting to “Presence: People in or regularly in your targeted locations.” Then set up radius targeting around your actual service area. not broad city or state targeting.

2. Running broad match keywords without guardrails

Broad match keywords tell Google to show your ads for any search that’s related to your keyword. “Plumber” on broad match might trigger your ad for “plumber salary,” “plumber training,” or “DIY plumbing tutorial.”

None of those searchers are going to hire you.

The fix: Start with phrase match and exact match keywords. If you do use broad match, pair it with a strong negative keyword list and smart bidding. Review your search terms report weekly and add irrelevant terms as negatives.

3. Sending traffic to the homepage

Your homepage is designed to serve everyone. existing customers, job seekers, partners, and prospects. It’s not designed to convert someone who just searched for a specific service.

When someone searches “emergency AC repair near me” and lands on your generic homepage, they have to hunt for the information they need. Most won’t bother. They’ll hit back and click on the next result.

The fix: Create dedicated landing pages for each service you’re advertising. The page should match the search intent exactly: the service they searched for, your service area, a clear call to action, and your phone number prominently displayed.

4. Not tracking conversions

If you’re not tracking conversions, you’re flying blind. You know how much you’re spending, but you have no idea what you’re getting for it. And Google’s smart bidding algorithms can’t optimize for results if they don’t know what a result looks like.

We’ve audited accounts spending thousands per month with zero conversion tracking set up. They had no idea which campaigns, keywords, or ads were actually generating calls and leads.

The fix: Set up conversion tracking for:

  • Phone calls (both from ads and from your website)
  • Form submissions
  • Direction requests (if you have a physical location)
  • Chat initiations (if applicable)

This gives you. and Google’s algorithms. the data needed to optimize toward actual business results.

5. Set it and forget it

Google Ads is not a set-it-and-forget-it platform. Markets change, competitors adjust their bids, new search terms emerge, and Google regularly updates its algorithms and ad formats.

Accounts that aren’t actively managed see their performance degrade over time. Costs creep up, irrelevant traffic leaks in, and opportunities get missed.

The fix: At minimum, review your campaigns weekly:

  • Check the search terms report and add negatives
  • Review geographic performance and adjust targeting
  • Test new ad copy variations
  • Monitor quality scores and adjust bids
  • Check conversion data for anomalies

Better yet, work with someone who does this full-time.

The common thread

All five of these mistakes share the same root cause: treating Google Ads as simple when it’s actually complex. The interface makes it easy to launch a campaign. But launching a campaign and running a profitable campaign are very different things.

Local businesses especially can’t afford wasted spend. Every dollar counts. The difference between a well-managed account and a neglected one can be 3-5x in terms of cost per lead.
